Ruth’s new paintings are from a group she calls ‘Unsettled Coast’. The paintings are based on the beach settlements of Auckland’s wild Waitakere coast. Most of the buildings and signs of human habitation have been consciously edited out of each work. Recent extreme weather events add to the plentiful information around the consequences of future climate changes, revealing serious challenges to human existence in coastal environments. Today, many houses exist at Piha, Karekare, Te Henga and Muriwai, but this may not always be so.
