Ross Melles

Ross Melles is a west coast artist who currently lives n Ross Melles ear Bethells Beach in Auckland.  Along side his painting practice Ross holds a degree in Education with a minor in Art History and is currently teaching.

Ross’s work deals mainly with coastal and inland themes with a particular concern for light and landscape form. His palette is based on umbers, cool hues and metallics – colours that are used in response to the cool light and glistening iron sands that are characteristic of New Zealand’s coastal scenes.  While Ross Melles paints directly from the landscape, his works move towards abstraction and at times with subtle surrealism.

During his studentship in Manuwatu Ross worked with the NZ sculptor Paul Dibble. Here he was encouraged to work on large scale canvas and to experiment in metal casting and other sculpting techniques. These references are carried throughout his painting process.

Ross has held numerous group and solo exhibitions.  His paintings currently hang in collections and in private residences around New Zealand, Australia, England, Germany and the U.S.A.

Examples of Ross Melles’ work can be viewed at Mobile Art Gallery, 23 Edwin Street, Mt Eden, Auckland.
