John Horner

John Horner is an expressive painter born in England in 1944. He embarked on his artistic journey at Takapuna Grammar School under the guidance of Owen R. Lee. Graduating with honors in painting from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1965, Horner initially shared his passion for art as a secondary school art teacher until the early 80s. Later, he served as a senior lecturer at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design until 2013, dedicating himself to nurturing the artistic talents of others.

Inspired by the rugged beauty of the New Zealand landscape and captivated by the dynamic contrasts of cityscapes bathed in the country’s sharp light, John Horner developed a distinctive painterly style. After completing a Master of Fine Art degree with honors in 2003, he delved into a theme close to his heart—New Zealand railway history. Horner’s artistic exploration manifested in a series of mixed media abstractions, rekindling his lifelong fascination with trains. Recently retired, John Horner now focuses his energy on his true passion—painting.
