Ralph Hotere (1931 – 2013)  |  Green Square 1 (1965)  |  101 x 101cm
Acrylic on canvas   $POA

Ralph Hotere returned to Aotearoa (from England and Europe) in 1965 with an appreciation of international art movements. He developed a formal reductivism and minimalist approach to his own painting; assembling dozens of combinations of squares, circles and truncated curvilinear bands in his work. Hotere’s visual shorthand involved reduced colours: a single black; a blue or two; or at most three colours, sometimes with red as a highlight. Please email Diana or call 027 2759 659 if you’d like to make a time to view Ralph Hotere’s paintings from 1965 at the gallery.
