Lisa Chandler

Lisa Chandler was born in Southend-on-Sea in 1969 and immigrated with her parents to New Zealand in 1978. Chandler expressed herself through art and design at school in Wellington winning the National Bank Art Award for 18 years of age and under at age 16.

She completed a Diploma in Visual Communication Design at Wellington Polytechnic and then went on to have a successful career as a graphic designer. By 2005 she was ready for more artistic challenges and switched to painting, winning in 2007 the Landscape/Seascape section of the Nelson Regional Art Awards. In January 2012 Chandler completed with honors a two-year full time Master of Fine Arts Postgraduate Degree at Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design in Auckland.

She is represented by galleries in Auckland and Nelson, and has works in private collections across New Zealand and in Singapore, Los Angeles and Sydney.

Lisa’s painting style has evolved from landscapes to contemporary works that are based on the concepts of the non-place, urban wandering and translation. Her art is intertwined with her love of travel and wandering global cities, the reflective space of the studio and the exciting process of painting.

Recent works explore the tension between the chaos of the crowd and the quiet of the individual in the non-place. The empty, private in-between spaces are highlighted; along with the unknown, the freedom and anonymity that the city and the canvas offer.

Obliteration is a key translation process in her work. It creates opportunities for chance happenings to occur and offers a refreshing freedom to experiment with paint without the constraints of intention impinging on creativity.
